I'm having trouble on the study guide, on number three. I keep getting -19x=-11X? I think there's something I'm doing wrong. I'm basically doing: 6x+4+(-x+-8)=-14x+-7x+10, then 10x+-9x=-21x+10 to equal -19x+-11x? (Oh and I figured out the infinite solution thing! Sorry if this was too late.. ^^;)
I see the problem. You can't add unlike terms. 6x+4 does not equal 10X. It is an order of operations thing, 6x means 6 times x so you would have to solve that before you add. We don't know what x is so we have to work around it. Think of the x as a label. The left side is 6xrays and $4 and you owe someone an xray and you owe someone $8, what do you have?
Okay cool! Thank you again. Another question (I'm sorry!!), how it goes is that if I do something like -9 to one side of the equation (previously a +9) then I have to do it to the other side, right? Also, When you said I can't add like terms, does that go for multiplication, division, and subtraction?
Yes. There is a video here: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/solving-linear-equations-and-inequalities/basic-equation-practice/v/equations-3 that can explain it better than I can in the comments if you need a refresher.
On tonight's homework... Uhm how do we multiply 1/3 and 47.50?
ReplyDeleteMultiplying by a third is the same thing as dividing by 3.
ReplyDeleteOh and can we skip the questions If we don't know the answers to?
ReplyDeleteThe way the work is set up makes it hard to skip around. What are you having trouble with?
Deleteim so lost on how to find things on this blog... is the pow thing up there for the practice or the real pow. it looks like the real pow...
ReplyDeleteThis is side we usually do in class together. The other side is the one you do.
DeleteOn the front of the pow we usually do together on masons driving column is that $150 or $50?
ReplyDelete$150. If you click the picture you can see a bigger version that is easier to read.
DeleteThank you so much!
DeleteYou're welcome.

DeleteAw man! I forgot about that! (*Will have to look over other problems as well.*) Thank you Ms. Lowery. I have uh.. 5 xrays and -4 dollars?
DeleteYou are most welcome. That is what you have. Beautiful job!

DeleteYou are correct about the 9s. You can multiply and divide unlike terms, but you cannot add or subtract them.
DeleteOne more question, with the nines, does that work with multiplication or division as well?
DeleteYes. There is a video here: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/solving-linear-equations-and-inequalities/basic-equation-practice/v/equations-3 that can explain it better than I can in the comments if you need a refresher.
DeleteAhhh thank you so much Ms. Lowery! Sorry to keep you so long. I hope you have a good night.
ReplyDeleteAny time, I would rather be on here a long time answering questions than have you stressing over something that I could have cleared up.
